CANCELLED – Russell Malone Quartet
Russell Malone is recognized as one of the greatest guitarists in contemporary jazz, with numerous acclaimed albums to his name. Malone is as well known for his own combos as he is for his longstanding participation in Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio and his work with Sonny Rollins and Dianne Reeves, who recruited Malone for his singular tone and limitless skill and imagination. A master of all tempos and a relentless swinger, Malone spins his musical stories – ranging from jazz and blues, to country, gospel, and hidden corners of the Great American Songbook – employing an instantly recognizable instrumental voice and sophisticated harmonies.
“I take pride on being open enough to play with anybody,” says Malone, citing musical encounters with such diverse artists at B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Andy Williams, James “Blood” Ulmer, and Ornette Coleman. He adds, “I love to swing, but I don’t look down my nose at other styles of music, or other musicians. I’ll play with anybody, if the music is good.” Malone’s Quartet on this concert date also features pianist Richard Germanson, bassist Vincent DuPont, and drummer Neal Smith.
