Hush is an album of all new original music by Remy and Pascal Le Boeuf and their contemporary jazz quintet, Le Boeuf Brothers. The album explores the extremes of quiet dynamics, as well as new recording parameters that inspire a unique approach to composing for, and improvising as, an ensemble. The ensemble recorded with microphones at a high input volume, and extra compression, a process that generates a more emotionally intimate result. In particular, it results in the low and high frequency ranges becoming emphasized. Aspects of physics support this result such as the proximity effect and the Fletcher Munson Curve. Like a close whisper, we hear more warmth and more air. In envisioning this recording as composers and improvisers, we viewed these parameters as creative restrictions.
