There’s no greater place to learn than on the bandstand. That’s why each spring the Monterey Jazz Festival invites over 1300 of the nation’s top student musicians to play their hearts out at the Next Generation Jazz Festival. One of the most inclusive festivals in the United States, the festival welcomes performances by middle, high school and collegiate groups of every kind: big bands, combos, vocal ensembles, as well as conglomerate bands. Over 130 groups apply each year, and from these the very best duke it out for the glory of performing at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September. The Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band represents the “best of the best” high school student musicians in Santa Cruz county. Hand-picked by their band directors, these talented young “ambassadors of jazz” pass a rigorous audition to earn their position in the Honor Band. During weekly rehearsals at Kuumbwa, they study advanced jazz theory, arranging, improvisation, and learn valuable life skills in team work and critical thinking. Under the direction of Dillon Baiocchi – an alumnus of the Honor Band and New York’s prestigious New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music – they gain vital performing experience at special events and festivals throughout the school year, culminating in a special headline performance at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center. Featuring the best Monterey County high school musicians, the Honor Ensembles tour the world each summer, in addition to being featured in a spotlight performance each fall at the Monterey Jazz Festival. The consistent high level of musicianship exhibited by these talented students is equal to that of many professional ensembles....
