Dave Egan is a prominent ukulele instructor, teaching UCSC’s OPERS class series and at the nationally attended West Coast Ukulele Retreat in Monterey and on the island of Hawaii, as well as at the Wine Country Ukulele Festival in Napa. His unique approach to adapting jazz standards to the ukulele focuses on including the rich complexity of the original chord voicing while preserving the elegant simplicity of this cherished instrument. This class is for all levels and will include practical techniques for adapting jazz standards to the ukulele for accompaniment and instrumental arrangements. Bring your ukes and a notepad. Free Event Composer, arranger, conductor, bandleader, trumpet player, and educator Ray Brown is about as versatile as they come. Having written music for Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Thad Jones, Bill Watrous, San Francisco’s Full Faith and Credit, and his own Great Big Band, he is adept at writing compositions and arrangements from big bands to small groups to rhythm trios to vocals and string orchestras. In this workshop, Ray will cover the fundamentals of jazz arranging including instrument ranges, transpositions, the rhythm section, song form, arrangement form, proper mechanics, and voicing’s (time permitting). Master Class – Ashwin Batish: Application of Indian Music Concepts to Jazz and World Music

FREE Local sitar and tabla player Ashwin Batish has been credited with the growing re-vitalization of a new genre of Indian music, “world beat raga rock.” He was trained in the North Indian classical tradition by his father the legendary Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish and later formed his own unique fusion of music based on the rich traditions of Indian, African, Middle Eastern, and other cultures, mixed with a Western beat taken from pop, rock and jazz. Ashwin will explain some of the intricacies of Indian music and how to apply this knowledge to jazz and world music. He is a first-call bassist in the Bay Area and beyond. This class will feature Robbins, along with Eddie Mendenhall on piano and Mike Shannon on drums, interpreting various jazz styles including improvisation, funk, rock, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban.
