Wednesday, November 28, 7:00 PM Master Class Series: The Supportive Roll of the Rhythm Section FREE! All levels welcome Doors: 6:30 PM The rhythm section is the foundation of a group. It is often responsible for setting the mood, harmony, and rhythmic feel of a piece of music. Scott Sorkin (guitar), John Shifflett (bass) and Jason Lewis (drums) will demonstrate various approaches to playing cohesively and creatively as a guitar–based rhythm section. Arranging a song, creating a vibe for a tune, and interplay between the players will be shown through performance. Discussion of these techniques from the perspective of each instrument will follow. Master Class Series – Free Stan Poplin: Insights into Jazz Bass – Tuesday, October 4, 7:00 pm This workshop will be a presentation of techniques and concepts for bass players to utilize in jazz settings and beyond. Topics to covered in this class: fundamental bass playing technique, constructing bass lines, understanding the rhythmic role of the bass, developing a melodic concept used in playing melodies and solos, interaction with the rhythm section and soloist along with tips for effective practice. The class will include a live performance to demonstrate the bass’s role in varied settings from solo to bass ensemble. Students of all levels are invited to attend.
