“Sosa’s music is the unifying sort.” – New York Times

Lauded pianist and composer, Omar Sosa, with six previous Grammy nominations to his credit, has established an international reputation for his exciting brand of Afro-Cuban jazz. His dedication to the roots of his music, blended with contemporary harmonic structures and crowd-pleasing performances, have made Sosa an innovator among his contemporaries. His latest album, Eggun, was commissioned by the Barcelona Jazz Festival as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. Sosa’s Afri-Lectric Sextet features Peter Apfelbaum on saxophone and Joo Kraus on trumpet.

Born in the Cuban city of Camaguey, Sosa got his start playing the marimba, later switching his focus to piano.  Sosa’s penchant for the keyboards was solidified when he began attending Cuba’s prestigious Escuela Nacional de Music in Havana. From there, Sosa moved to Quito, Ecuador where he got his start as a professional musician before eventually landing in San Francisco in 1995.

After his arrival in San Francisco, Sosa quickly became immersed in the Bay Area Latin jazz scene, where his blend of folkloric and jazz influences was immediately embraced.  His music offers everything from carefully composed melodic forms, to freeform improvisational expression. Cuban, Afro-Caribbean, classical, jazz and hip-hop elements all find a place in his compositions. His most recent album, Eggun, highlights his jazz routes (it was conceived as an homage to Davis’ 1959 Kind of Blue) and his Afri-Lectric Sextet finds solace in the pianist’s Afro-Cuban roots.

Longtime Sosa collaborator Peter Apfelbaum plays a key role in this group. West Coast jazz fans know Apfelbaum as an East Bay stalwart, known for his world music and jam band excursions. German trumpeter Joo Kraus provides a rich tone, ala Davis, altogether creating an aromatic blend of swirling musical flavors.
