“…art pop with orchestral inclinations…” – The Deli Magazine
One of the most esteemed alumni of Kuumbwa Jazz’s education programs (first as a participant in our Summer Jazz Camp, then as a member of the Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band), saxophonist Jesse Scheinin returns home to celebrate the release of his new album, Jesse and Forever. Having been mentored by Joshua Redman, Danilo Perez, and Billy Harper, expect an evening filled with bold sonic explorations – part David Bowie, part Coltrane Quartet – while crossing the line between theatrical and exuberant.
Currently based out of New York City, Scheinin wears many hats. Aside from his ongoing roles as a saxophonist, composer and bandleader, he is also an educator and videographer. He is the co-star of a viral YouTube video called “Dueling Saxophones,” which has garnered over 1.2 million views. A collaboration with Eddie Barbach, the video has led them to appearances in the PBS film Opus Jazz and the Tudo e Jazz Festival in Brazil. It’s worth noting and perhaps telling, with Scheinin’s flair for showmanship, while he was in Brazil he also toured as a star of the Brazilian circus.
A graduate of the Berklee School of Music, he was a part of the Global Jazz Institute and learned from many of contemporary jazz’s great artists. This platform has afforded Scheinin the opportunity to play gigs at locations across the globe, including the legendary Blue Note club in Manhattan, the Panama Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival and our region’s flagship Monterey Jazz Festival.
The Jesse Scheinin and Forever album has flourishes of world music, ala Brazil’s legendary psychedelic band Os Mutantes, Beach Boys-esque harmonies and an underlying jazz-centric foundation. (“The Monster” with Rihanna). His vocals range from rock intensity to cabaret crooning. Two of the tracks on the album (“Memories” and “Back to Brazil”) were produced by Aalias, who also produced Eminem’s newest single.
The Forever band includes top players: Armand Hirsch – guitar and keyboards (performed with Bobby McFerrin); Jake Sherman – keyboards (performed with Ralph Peterson); and Jonathon Pinson – drums (attended the Monk Institute and performed with Wayne Shorter). It’s a treat that the Kuumbwa audience has seen Scheinin’s growth as an artist and his new album/group, Forever, is an exciting and fresh chapter.
