“Terrasson spins an impressionistic and nouveau vista…” – All About Jazz
French-American pianist Jacky Terrasson came up through the venerable jazz school of Betty Carter, accompanying the iconic singer for many years. There’s no lack of variety in Terrasson’s approach to material, as he incorporates funk, soul and allusions to contemporary pop songs amongst his arrangements. Following the pianist’s elasticity and free-flowing concerts (where spontaneity is the modus operandi) his trio has an uncanny ability to swing through Terrasson’s melodic inversions and rollicking vamps, as well as the moments of soft and sparse dynamics. One of the finest pianists on the scene today, his latest album, Gouache, garnered excellent reviews and features original material alongside that of John Lennon, Amy Winehouse and more.
Beginning his piano studies at the age of five, Terrasson got hooked on jazz after studying with Jeff Gardner and a chance encounter with Round Midnight director Francis Paudras. He pursued jazz by moving to Boston and studying at Berklee, where he won the Thelonious Monk Award in 1993 and landed a spot in Carter’s touring band.
It was after the New York Times named him as one of their ’30 Under 30’ individuals that he landed a solo deal with Blue Note Records and launched a solo career with three consecutive trio records. 2001 saw the release of A Paris, a personal and intimate personal interpretation of French classics and garnered him several prestigious awards, which elevated him to one of jazz’s premier leaders.
His playing akin to the great Bud Powell’s, Terrasson exhibits carefully controlled dynamics on the keys, lending to expressive and swooping performances. The connection to European classical music also pervades his music through his knowledge of French composers such as Ravel, Faure and Debussy and on Gouache, those stately influences blend harmoniously with the compositions of pop/rock luminaries, perfectly showcasing Terrasson’s ability to blend musical worlds together in inventive and compelling ways.
