Gillian Harwin Lost ‘n Found CD Release Tour
Thursday, July 3
Kuumbwa Jazz Center

Gillian Harwin is a master of many trades. She is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator, native Californian and longtime New Yorker, but above all else she is a performer. Influenced by the rock and R&B greats, she leans towards a gritty, yet soulful sound. The winner of the prestigious and historic Apollo Theatre Amateur Night, Harwin is releasing a new album, Lost ‘n Found, this summer and is on the road, making her return to her former west coast home-base. The former Kuumbwa volunteer returns headlining the stage with Tasty Chops Engle on guitar, Kris Yunker on keyboards, Reese Bullen on drums, plus specials guests.

Born in the hills of Northern California, the youngest of three girls, Harwin spent her childhood setting up make-shift drum kits with pots and pans in the kitchen, choreographing dance routines and keeping a diary, in which she noted “I want to be a famous singer!”  Her weekends were spent perusing the bins at Tower Records and playing the new albums she’d pick up, culminating in studying guitar and voice starting in her early teenage years.  After college, she spent years travelling abroad, gathering inspiration for the music she would write in the following years.

When your travel experiences include studying dance in Latin America, journeying across North Africa and living on a sailboat in the Caribbean (not to mention the learning of five languages) it only makes sense that the resulting music would be eclectic and festive, and Harwin’s delivers on both fronts.  Her songs are a blend of many genres, with a healthy dose of humor blended in.

Eventually settling in New York City, Harwin released her debut album, Whiskey Sandwich, in 2004 and took the Super Top Dog title at the historic Amateur Night competition at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre in 2009.  She continues to be involved in many musical projects, such as her 10-piece R&B band, Reverse Double Clutch, and performances at Phaedra’s Cabaret in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
