Musician/improviser/composer/writer/educator William Parker has been dubbed, by The Village Voice as “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time.” Parker – who plays the bass, as well as the shakuhachi flute, double reeds, tuba, ngoni, and gembri – has recorded over 150 albums, has published six books, and has mentored hundreds of musicians and artists. Hailing from the Bronx, Parker initially studied bass with Richard Davis, Milt Hinton, Jimmy Garrison and others, before moving on to be a key shaper of the free jazz movement. In 2013, Parker received the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award inrecognition of his influence and impact on the jazz scene over the last forty years. In Parker’s Blue: Music, Movement & Words project he is joined by Hamid Drake on percussion and Patricia Nicholson with poetry and movement.
