CANCELLED – William Parker – Blue: Music, Movement & Words

COVID-19 Update: Recognizing the mandate from the Governor of California and other official agencies, Kuumbwa Jazz is cancelling/postponing concerts through at least May 31st. Ticket-holders will be contacted directly regarding refunds and other ticketing options, such as crediting the ticket(s) towards a future concert date, or recognizing the value of a ticket purchase as a tax-deductible donation to Kuumbwa Jazz. We will be working on rescheduling as many concert dates as possible and will provide updates as they become available. We appreciate your understanding and we will continue to follow the direction and guidance provided by official agencies, as the wellbeing of our patrons and community remains our top priority.

Musician/improviser/composer/writer/educator William Parker has been dubbed, by The Village Voice as “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time.” Parker – who plays the bass, as well as the shakuhachi flute, double reeds, tuba, ngoni, and gembri – has recorded over 150 albums, has published six books, and has mentored hundreds of musicians and artists. Hailing from the Bronx, Parker initially studied bass with Richard Davis, Milt Hinton, Jimmy Garrison and others, before moving on to be a key shaper of the free jazz movement. In 2013, Parker received the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award inrecognition of his influence and impact on the jazz scene over the last forty years. In Parker’s Blue: Music, Movement & Words project he is joined by Hamid Drake on percussion and Patricia Nicholson with poetry and movement.
