The Musical Journey of Jews In The Ottoman Empire
Chadeish Yameinu – Jewish Renewal of Santa Cruz, will be holding their third annual benefit concert at Kuumbwa Jazz Center on December 15. The music group, ZIRZUVI, will be performing this year. ZIRZUVI specializes in the music of the Sephardic Jews who fled the Spanish inquisition to settle in new lands. The performance will weave together Middle Eastern and Balkan musical styles to create a sound that will take the audience on a melodic journey to distant places. Many of the songs performed will be sung in Ladino (a very archaic form of Castilian Spanish mixed somewhat with Hebrew elements as well as Aramaic, Arabic, Turkish, Greek, French, Bulgarian, and Italian), spoken by descendants of the Spanish Jews who were expelled from Spain after 1492.
