The Color of Jazz: Album Cover Photographs by Pete Turner
We can’t wait to celebrate the opening of Pete Turner’s The Color Of Jazz photography exhibit at Kuumbwa this week, as part of First Friday Santa Cruz. A pioneer of color photography, Turner’s career began during the infancy of the medium, at a time when color was used almost exclusively for commercial purposes. Unlike many contemporaries, Turner embraced color, seizing opportunities that allowed him to master the process and to create the imagery he felt compelled to make. Unconcerned with the labels of “art” or “commercial”, he deftly created a life’s work that blurred those boundaries. Turner achieved his vision by combining the technical tools of photography with a perceptive eye for compositional color. Learning to manipulate hue and saturation early in his career, Turner created photographs that looked unlike anything previously seen. The Color of Jazz gallery portfolio showcases the legendary design collaboration between jazz producer Creed Taylor and Turner, whose album covers revolutionized jazz album cover art for the Impulse!, CTI and A&M record labels. DJ Vinnie will be on-hand to celebrate, playing the music of those classic ’70s releases. Bruxo Food Truck will be serving up eats outside the Kuumbwa courtyard, and Gravity Water will have a table to share their mission of gravity-powered water filtration.
