Kuumbwa Jazz Presents

CANCELLED – SJZ Collective Plays Weather Report, Mingus & Monk

COVID-19 Update: Recognizing the mandate from the Governor of California and other official agencies, Kuumbwa Jazz is cancelling/postponing concerts through at least June 25th. Ticket-holders will be contacted directly regarding refunds and other ticketing options, such as crediting the ticket(s) towards a future concert date, or recognizing the value of a ticket purchase as a tax-deductible donation to Kuumbwa Jazz. We will be working on rescheduling as many concert dates as possible and will provide updates as they become available. We appreciate your understanding and we will continue to follow the direction and guidance provided by official agencies, as the wellbeing of our patrons and community remains our top priority.

With each member of the SJZ Collective an acclaimed bandleader in their own right, the Collective is a powerhouse ensemble. The SJZ Collective is comprised of drummer Wally Schnalle, trumpeter/flugelhorn player John L. Worley, Jr., organist Brian Ho, guitarist Hristo Vitchev, saxophonist Oscar Pangilinan, and bassist Saúl Sierra. The brainchild of Schnalle, the group launched in 2018 with a program that included reimagining the music of Thelonious Monk. That year they debuted at the San Jose Jazz Winter Fest to an enthusiastic crowd. In 2019, they debuted a new program featuring the music of Charles Minus. All About Jazz praised the Collective’s performance at The Hong Kong International Jazz Festival, noting that they “approach vintage material as the jumping off point for electrifying arrangements that feel both fresh and familiar.” This year the Collective has chosen to take on the music of one of the most influential bands in the world of jazz fusion: Weather Report. The music of that preeminent fusion band is filled with beautiful and surprising melodies, infectious grooves, and unbridled energy. The SJZ Collective’s take on this great material promises to be a treat for the audience.
