Guitarist Oscar Peñas was born in Barcelona. His family loved traditional, folk, and flamenco music, and his maternal grandfather was a trumpet player who occasionally played with Xavier Cugat’s orchestra. Peñas’ first studies were devoted to classical music. He later developed a fascination with jazz and decided to dedicate his career to the genre, incorporating a diverse range rhythms and styles into his music. A recipient of the Jazz Road grant from the South Arts organization, Peñas was already a widely respected figure on the international jazz scene before he settled in New York City a decade ago. Since then he’s truly blossomed, creating a singular body of work that weaves together elements of jazz, Spanish folk music, and the European classical tradition. Peñas’ quartet on this concert date will also feature violinist Sara Caswell, bassist Motohito Fukushima, and drummer Richie Barshay.
This concert is made possible with the support of Jazz Road, a national initiative of South Arts, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
