New York City-based jazz flutist/composer/producer/educator and Sunnyside Records artist Jamie Baum has toured the United States and over 35 countries. She has performed at major festivals and concert halls and has worked with artists as renowned and diverse as Paul Motian, Randy Brecker, Dave Douglas, Fred Hersch, Louis Cole, Roy Hargrove, Anthony Braxton and Wadada Leo Smith. Her many awards and honors include several grants and residencies, a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship, eleven nominations by the Jazz Journalists Association for ‘Flutist of the Year’, appearing in the DownBeat Critics Polls annually since 1998, and making the short lists in both the JazzTimes Critics and Readers Polls in addition to several international publications. She’s received critical praise for six albums as a leader, including four with her Septet+, a band she’s led for 20 years. Through a highly competitive auditioning process, Baum was chosen to tour for the US State Department as a Kennedy Center Jazz Ambassador (’99-’03) and has since been frequently sponsored by the State Department while on her own tours in Europe and South Asia. Though focusing primarily on jazz, Ms. Baum has been involved in projects and tours performing classical, globally influenced, new music, jazz-funk/rock, Brazilian and Latin music. In addition to leading her Septet+, she has led Short Stories (featuring Andy Milne and Gregoire Maret) since 2015, co-leads Yard Byard: The Jaki Byard Project and NYC Jazz Flutes, and is involved in several project as a side-woman. Baum is on the faculty of the jazz department at the Manhattan School of Music (since 2006), and is a clinician for Altus Flutes/KHS America.
