Born in Mexico City, 4-time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sánchez began playing the drums at age five and performed professionally in his early teens in Mexico’s rock, jazz and Latin music scenes. He pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico and in 1993 enrolled in Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Jazz Studies. Sánchez currently has close to a dozen recordings as a leader and solo artist. His recent projects to date include the critically acclaimed, through-composed epic The Meridian Suite, the star-studded album Three Times Three, the Grammy-nominated Bad Hombre, and his latest album, SHIFT. Bad Hombre, featuring BIGYUKI, Thana Alexa, and Lex Sadler is a layered, atmospheric project melding drums with keyboards and electronica elements. Mike Hobart of Financial Times writes of the project, “Here, he develops his grasp of the cinematic with an atmospheric and imaginative solo recording that envelops beautifully formed drum creations with layers of keyboards and electronica. The album begins with a scratchy recording of Sánchez’ grandfather reading poetry backed by a mariachi band. Mexican roots established, crisp funky beats deliver a platform for the narratives that follow. These are tense and compelling, with a range from the speculative and dreamy to the nightmarish and irate.”
