“… pioneering new possibilities for the violin and for jazz.” – The MacArthur Foundation

Since Regina Carter first gained traction in the late 1980s with her group Straight Ahead, the range of artists who have called upon her for her singular violin work is quite impressive including Max Roach, Oliver Lake, Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton and Billy Joel. On her latest album, Southern Comfort, Carter continues the musical investigation of her family’s heritage, which began on her 2010 album Reverse Thread. Equipped with a song-list comprised of folk songs and spirituals, Carter says, “I wanted to hear the music that my ancestors heard…tracing my father’s roots in the American South.” The 2006 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Award recipient is credited with re-invigorating the jazz violin with a new spirit!
