“One of the 25 best drummers of all-time.” – Modern Drummer

An inductee into Modern Drummer’s Hall of Fame, Dave Weckl, has recently embarked on his first solo project in over a decade with his new Acoustic Band. Featuring Gary Meek on saxophones, Makoto Ozone on keyboards and Tom Kennedy on bass, this group is filled to the brim with riveting chemistry and vibrant musical conversation. Weckl is a top-call session player, while Kennedy has been an East Coast scene mainstay and Ozone has developed a reputation as one of Japan’s finest pianists.

For more than 25 years, Weckl has developed and maintained a reputation, amongst fans and musicians alike, as one of the world’s most influential drummers. His unrivaled discography spans jazz, rock and pop; from Diana Ross to Chick Corea to Robert Plant. A native of St. Louis, Weckl cut his teeth in the local scene before landing the Simon & Garfunkel reunion tour in 1983. That high-profile gig led to numerous, notable sessions and tours, including a seven-year period of work with Corea, which earned much acclaim, as well as a Grammy.

Weckl is joined in this group by Ozone, who is one of Japan’s finest pianists and is known for his collaborations with legendary vibraphonist Gary Burton. Bassist Tom Kennedy is also a native son of St. Louis and has been a mainstay on the East Coast session scene since the mid-eighties. Gary Meek is known for his smooth and melodic saxophone tone, providing a perfect counterpart to the expressive and vocal quality of the Weckl/Kennedy rhythm section.

This Acoustic Band is a true group of like-minded musical compatriots, while also serving as a fresh and satisfying outlet for one of our era’s greatest drummers. With an unbridled passion for playing, Weckl states his mission as “to inspire as many people as possible to want to play music.” This band is not merely a vessel to showcase Weckl’s singular talents; it’s a master class in improvisation and collaboration and it certainly does inspire.
