Nicholas Payton has made a radical turn in the direction of his music, eschewing the classic acoustic jazz format for an electric/synthesized project called Sonic Trance (Warner Brothers). Like some of his contemporaries, he currently chooses to recognize that jazz is a progressive music that reflects the time in which he lives. The seven-piece group puts down a funkier groove and adds various electronic additions to the sonic palette that makes it accessible to young music lovers and adventurous jazz fans alike.
